What happens to a transparent background
JPG has no alpha channel, so transparency cannot survive the conversion. Every transparent pixel is filled with white instead.
For a logo that will sit on a white page this is invisible and perfectly fine. On any other background it will show as a white rectangle around your graphic. If the image needs to stay transparent, convert it to WebP rather than JPG, or keep it as a PNG and resize it instead.
How much smaller will it get?
It depends almost entirely on what the image contains. PNG stores every pixel exactly, which is efficient for flat colour and wasteful for photographs — so the more photographic your image, the more you gain.

When not to convert
- The image has transparency you need to keep.
- It is a logo, icon or diagram made of flat colour and sharp edges — JPG blurs those edges and the file may not even be smaller.
