The same size as most of Europe and India
35 × 45 mm is the most widely used passport photo size in the world — the UK, the Schengen area, India and many other countries all specify it. That means a photo cropped for one of them is usually the right shape for the others.
What differs between countries is not the rectangle but the rules inside it: how much of the frame your head must fill, the acceptable background colour, and whether head coverings are allowed. Getting 413 × 531 right does not make a photo compliant everywhere.
The UK checks your photo before you pay
HM Passport Office runs an automated check on a digital photo at the point of upload, and it tells you immediately whether the image passed. That is unusual — most countries accept the file and only reject it later in processing, by which point you have paid and waited.

Digital applications versus printed photos
