Why you would go backwards
WebP is the better format on almost every technical measure, so converting away from it looks like a step backwards. It usually is not — it is a compatibility fix.

What the conversion costs you
- File size grows. JPG needs roughly 25–35% more bytes for the same visual quality.
- Transparency is lost. JPG has no alpha channel, so transparent pixels are filled with white — convert to PNG instead if you need to keep it.
- A second lossy pass. Both formats discard detail, so a WebP that was already compressed loses a little more on the way to JPG.
- Animation is lost. Animated WebP files convert to a single still frame.
None of this is visible in normal use at sensible quality settings — but it is a one-way trip, so keep the WebP original.
