Which image format should you use?

FormatBest forTransparency
PNGLogos, graphics, screenshots, sharp edgesYes
JPGPhotos — smallest size for rich imagesNo
WebPWeb use — smaller than both at similar qualityYes

Rule of thumb: photos → JPG or WebP; anything with transparency or text → PNG or WebP.

Resize by pixels or by percentage?

Use pixels when something else decides the size for you — an upload form that demands 600×600, a profile picture slot, a print template. Type the exact numbers and leave "lock ratio" on so the image is not stretched.

Use percentage when you simply need the file smaller and nothing depends on exact dimensions. Scaling a photo to 50% halves its width and height, which removes about three quarters of the pixels and usually shrinks the file by a similar margin.

If you enter a width and a height that do not match the original proportions, "lock ratio" recalculates the second number for you. Turn it off only when you genuinely want to distort the image.

How far can you shrink an image before it looks bad?

Scaling down is forgiving — you are discarding detail that was there, and the result stays sharp. Scaling up is not: enlarging cannot invent detail that was never captured, so a 400 px image stretched to 1600 px will look soft in any tool. That is what the "don't enlarge" checkbox prevents.

ScalePixels remainingTypical use
100%AllOriginal, compress only
75%~56%Light trim, no visible change
50%25%Web images, email attachments
25%~6%Thumbnails and avatars

Percentages apply to width and height, so the pixel count falls by the square — halving the dimensions leaves a quarter of the pixels.
